Healing Infidelity and Emotional Affairs

Betrayal Trauma Focused Couples Therapy

Finding out that there is someone else in your relationship is a devastating, world stopping and “everything changes” moment.  Betrayal of trust from infidelity or an emotional affair is a trauma because it feels like a bomb has gone off and left a gaping distance.  Partners are on opposite sides of a canyon, shocked, hurt and afraid and confused about how to find a way back to each other again and how they will ever recover.

Emotionally focused couples therapy provides couples a structured repair process for couples to follow when trust is damaged or broken.  Janet works with couples who want to find a way to restore their relationship and repair the injuries to their bond.

“Rigorous studies during the past fifteen years have shown up to 70 percent of couples who go through EFT treatment report significant improvement, and are happier in their relationships. The results appear lasting, even with couples at high risk for divorce.”

-Sue Johnson (Hold Me Tight)

“EFT is one of the best documented, most substantive and well researched approaches to couple therapy.”

-John M. Gottman, Ph.D

EFT is “one of the few approaches to marital therapy that has been proven to be effective.”

-Alan S. Gurman, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Family Therapy, University of Wisconsin Medical School

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

The premise behind Emotionally Focused Therapy is that humans are naturally wired for love. People innately have a longing to connect with partners, parents, family and friends throughout life.

Being closely connected in a marriage is what makes the relationship a safe haven and a secure base for each partner. The distress partners feel often relates to negative interactions and experiences that pull a couple apart, causing negative emotions to build up or lead to periods of distance and isolation.

How Does EFT Couples Therapy Work?

EFT helps couples sort through and end their negative and repetitive patterns of relating to each other and then begin to build transformative and positive connections with each other, leading to meaningful and long lasting change.  Janet Voss is a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist who works collaboratively to overcome the things pulling couples apart and strengthen their bond between them.

Janet Voss is a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist and member of the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (ICEEFT).
